Plants for Spring

It’s so exciting to see the bright and vibrant greens of spring on the trees and in the hedgerows, telling us summer is not far off. And while you’re planning for summer, you can also enjoy some fantastic plants and colours during springtime.

We always carry a good selection of bedding plants to match the season, and then the season to follow, so borders, planters and window boxes are always a good place to start. Bulbs, of course, are important ambassadors for this season, but spring is also a great time for perennials: think of the whites, pinks and purples of Aubretia and Dicentra, or the beautiful star-like flowers of Aquilegia.

Shrubs are good too. We especially like Escallonia (which flowers June-October) and Weigela, which comes into bloom a little earlier in May.  As younger shrubs these two stand-alone very successfully. Escallonia also makes a good hedge while Weigela, if let be, can reach up to 5m in height, so it’s worth planting carefully and pruning to taste!

On a smaller physical scale we stock a good variety of alpine plants which are versatile and robust. Among our favourites are Lithodora, Phlox, Saxifraga, and the dramatic spikes of Veronica

Some of the plants typically in stock for spring include

  • Bedding and Pot Plants: think Geraniums, Petunias and Pansies; also Begonias, Marigolds, Violas and Primroses.

  • Alpine plants: Erodium, Saxifraga, Erigeron, Scutellaria are all excellent value for spring and into summer.

  • Shrubs: Escallonia and Weigela are amongst our long-proven favourites.

  • Perennials: we sell lots of Aubretia, Aquilegia, Poppies and Dicentra

  • Bulbs: Anemone, Daffodils, Narcissus, Crocus, Iris and Tulips are always popular and with good reason.

Whatever you’re looking for, the best way to make up your mind is to look at plants ‘in the flesh’. We have a good selection to choose from, whatever the season and by popping in you might find something you haven’t seen or thought of before.

Call in if you live locally or can reach us with a short detour – we also have customers travelling many miles, so we know it’s never too far!
